Assessment
Gwanda Lithium Mine, operated by Tsingshan Holding Group, has completed a processing plant producing 1,500 tonnes per day of lithium concentrate. A concentrator produces lithium concentrate, which is the product the 1 January 2027 prohibition is directed at, and does not constitute compliant beneficiation capacity. No lithium sulphate plant has been announced for the operation, whether in construction, financed or planned, and Koussi has located no reporting of one. Reporting of 25 August 2026, quoting Mines and Mining Development Minister Dr Polite Kambamura, listed Gwanda Lithium Company among Zimbabwe's five active lithium mines and identified Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe as the only operator to have established a lithium sulphate plant. The operation continues to export concentrate: National Railways of Zimbabwe, Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway and Silvergill transported a first consignment of 1,000 tonnes of concentrate from the mine in July 2026. On the evidence available no route to compliant beneficiation capacity by 1 January 2027 is visible, and unlike operators with plants under construction or announced, no such route has been proposed.
